Grand Wailea: A Luxurious Paradise on Maui’s Shores
Grand Wailea, Maui Webcams. The Grand Wailea, a luxurious resort nestled on the southwestern shores of Maui, Hawaii, has been a beacon of opulence and Hawaiian hospitality since its opening in 1991. This sprawling 40-acre property has become synonymous with tropical elegance, offering visitors a blend of breathtaking natural beauty and world-class amenities.
The resort’s story begins in the late 1980s when Japanese businessman Takeshi Sekiguchi envisioned creating a grand resort that would redefine luxury in Hawaii. Sekiguchi, known for his ambitious real estate projects, saw potential in the pristine beaches of Wailea and set out to build what would become one of the most lavish resorts in the world.
Construction of the Grand Wailea began in 1989, with an estimated cost of $600 million – an astronomical sum for a single resort at the time. The project was part of a larger Japanese investment boom in Hawaii, which saw billions of dollars poured into the islands’ real estate and tourism sectors.
Designed by renowned architects Wimberly, Allison, Tong & Goo (WATG), the resort’s architecture aimed to blend Hawaiian cultural elements with modern luxury. The result was a sprawling complex featuring Italianate architecture with distinctly Hawaiian touches, such as the extensive use of local materials and artwork.
When the Grand Wailea opened its doors on September 4, 1991, it immediately set a new standard for luxury resorts in Hawaii. The property boasted 780 rooms and suites, multiple restaurants, a 50,000 square foot spa (the largest in Hawaii at the time), and an elaborate pool complex that would become one of its most iconic features.
The resort’s crowning jewel was undoubtedly its pool area, known as the “Wailea Canyon Activity Pool.” This aquatic playground featured nine individual pools on six different levels, connected by a lazy river, slides, rapids, and waterfalls. The complex also included the world’s first water elevator, allowing guests to be lifted between pool levels while remaining in the water.
Another standout feature of the Grand Wailea was its extensive art collection. Sekiguchi, an art enthusiast, invested heavily in acquiring pieces from renowned artists. The resort became home to works by Fernando Botero, Fernand Léger, and Pablo Picasso, among others. This commitment to art transformed the Grand Wailea into a veritable museum, with sculptures and paintings adorning its public spaces and gardens.
The timing of the Grand Wailea’s opening, however, coincided with a global economic downturn and the bursting of Japan’s economic bubble. This led to financial difficulties for many Japanese investments in Hawaii, including the Grand Wailea. Despite these challenges, the resort’s reputation for luxury and exceptional service continued to grow.
In 1998, the property was acquired by KSL Recreation Corporation, marking the beginning of a series of ownership changes. In 2004, CNL Hotels & Resorts purchased the resort, followed by Morgan Stanley Real Estate in 2007. Each new owner brought its own vision and investments to the property, helping to maintain its position as a premier luxury destination.
One of the most significant changes came in 2006 when the resort became part of the Waldorf Astoria Collection, Hilton’s luxury brand. This affiliation brought the Grand Wailea into a network of some of the world’s most prestigious hotels and resorts, further enhancing its global reputation.
Throughout its history, the Grand Wailea has continually evolved to meet the changing expectations of luxury travelers. In 2008, the resort underwent a $50 million renovation, updating its rooms, restaurants, and public spaces. This was followed by another significant renovation in 2017, which saw updates to the property’s pools, spa, and dining offerings.
The resort has also been a pioneer in sustainable tourism practices. In recent years, it has implemented various eco-friendly initiatives, including a comprehensive recycling program, the use of energy-efficient lighting and appliances, and efforts to conserve water through advanced irrigation systems and low-flow fixtures.
The Grand Wailea has played host to numerous celebrities, dignitaries, and high-profile events over the years. Its picturesque setting has made it a popular location for destination weddings, while its extensive meeting and convention facilities have attracted corporate events from around the world.
In 2018, the resort once again changed hands, this time being acquired by Blackstone Real Estate Partners for $1.1 billion as part of a larger deal. This acquisition marked the beginning of another chapter in the Grand Wailea’s history, with plans for further renovations and enhancements to the property.
Despite the challenges faced by the tourism industry in recent years, particularly during the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Grand Wailea has remained a symbol of resilience and adaptability. The resort implemented stringent health and safety protocols to ensure the wellbeing of its guests and staff, while continuing to provide the luxurious experience for which it is known.
As of 2024, the Grand Wailea continues to be one of Maui’s premier luxury resorts. Its 780 rooms and suites, nine pools, award-winning spa, and diverse dining options continue to attract visitors from around the world. The resort’s commitment to blending Hawaiian culture with world-class luxury remains at the forefront of its operations, with cultural programs and experiences offered to guests alongside its more traditional resort amenities.
Looking to the future, the Grand Wailea faces both opportunities and challenges. The ongoing evolution of luxury travel, increasing competition in the high-end resort market, and the growing emphasis on sustainable and responsible tourism will all shape the resort’s trajectory in the coming years.
From its ambitious beginnings as a visionary project by a Japanese businessman to its current status as a world-renowned luxury destination, the Grand Wailea has left an indelible mark on Maui’s tourism landscape. As it continues to evolve and adapt, the resort remains true to its core mission: providing an unparalleled experience of Hawaiian luxury and hospitality to visitors from around the globe.
